A beautifully illustrated early 20th-century infant reader, Large Type Story - Infant Reader I, published by The Educational Publishing Company Ltd., London & Cardiff.

Bound in an olive green Arts & Crafts–influenced cloth cover, this little book was designed to help young children learn to read through gentle storytelling and generous, easy-to-follow type. Inside, it’s filled with charming black-and-white illustrations alongside occasional colour plates, including woodland scenes, huntsmen on horseback, and a wonderfully evocative mermaid by the sea.

There’s something especially poignant about early schoolbooks like this: once held by small hands, read aloud in classrooms or at kitchen tables, their pages quietly carrying the marks of everyday life. The paper has mellowed beautifully with age, and there is visible wear, spotting, and light staining throughout -  all part of its history and charm.

A lovely piece for:

– collectors of antique and vintage children’s books

– folk-inspired interiors and layered bookshelves

– framing individual illustrated pages

– anyone drawn to nostalgic educational ephemera and storytelling objects

Condition: Good vintage condition overall. Expected wear consistent with age, including rubbing to the cover, softened corners, foxing, and occasional marks to the pages. All pages appear present.

A gentle, evocative piece of childhood history — perfect for slow homes, quiet shelves, and those who find beauty in objects that have lived a life.
