Antique French Drip Glaze Pot with Roped Handles

A truly special antique French glazed terracotta pot with the most incredible drip glaze in rich jewel tones, deep green, earthy ochre, warm chestnut, and a vivid cobalt blue that catches the light beautifully. The glaze runs in painterly vertical ribbons all the way around, pooling and overlapping in places in that perfectly imperfect way only old French pottery can do.

It’s finished with twisted roped handles on either side, sculptural, rustic, and full of folk charm. The form itself is gently ridged and wheel-thrown, with a wonderfully tactile feel and an unglazed terracotta base that shows its age and origin beautifully.

Pieces like this are so hard to find now, especially with this kind of colour and character. It looks stunning with olive branches or herbs, but it’s just as lovely left empty on a shelf, where the glaze can do all the talking.
