An incredibly beautiful antique French stoneware confit pot, beautifully formed with soft curves, twin looped handles and a gently flared rim. The surface is that perfect warm grey, scattered with timeworn speckling and subtle marks that speak of years of use.

Around the body, the most wonderful cobalt slip decoration moves freely, loose, painterly brushstrokes that feel almost instinctive. Like ink on paper or seaweed drifting in water. No two sides quite the same, each one with its own rhythm.

Stamped to the base with  “A. Nully”, a registered maker’s mark, with a partially worn upper line that has softened over time. Pieces of this kind are often found unmarked, so to have a readable stamp like this is really special, and even more so in this larger, more generous size.

There is wear to the lower edge and surface, as you’d expect from a piece of this age, but nothing that detracts but only adds to its story.

Originally made for preserving and storing food, it now makes the most beautiful vessel for branches, kitchen herbs or simply left empty to be admired. One of those pieces that doesn’t try too hard, but quietly anchors a space.

Late 19th to early 20th century, France.
