A rare, one of a kind, characterful solid brass box, most likely made to hold fishing bait or possibly tobacco, dating to the 19th century. Now it feels more at home on a quiet shelf or tucked into a well-loved writing desk. I found it in Charlottenburg, Berlin, and was instantly drawn to the beautiful little otter on the lid—beautifully cast and full of charm, as if caught mid-swim.
It has a lovely weight in the hand and a soft, timeworn patina that speaks of years of use. The curved form and hinged lid suggest it was made handmade with care and intention—and inside, the brass has mellowed to that rich golden tone only time can create.
