A beautifully detailed Victorian brass letter clip in the form of a hand, with a brass front and a tin backplate. These ornate clips were once used to keep letters, notes, or photographs neatly in place on a writing desk, where even the most practical objects were made decorative.
The hand motif, complete with a crown-like cuff and fine engraved detail, was a popular symbol in the 19th century, often representing friendship, fidelity, and welcome. This example is particularly unusual in that it carries an etched stamp reading “TBM” on the front, adding intrigue and a touch of mystery to its history. Finished with a little hole at the back where ribbon could be attached to make it part of a gallery wall.
