An extraordinary little relic of the 19th century, this Victorian stoneware ink bottle tells a story of survival. Unearthed from a Victorian bottle dump, this piece appears to have been caught in the flames of a historical burn-off, the method once used to dispose of unwanted ceramics and glass. And yet here it stands, fully intact, with only fine crazing and scorched patina to tell its tale.
The glaze has darkened to a moody charcoal black in places, fading to an oaty, toasted brown where the flames spared it, creating a completely unique, natural gradient finish that no kiln could replicate. The glossy crackle glaze adds quiet texture and movement, while the simple utilitarian form feels grounding and timeless.
Once used to hold ink for letter writing and ledgers, now it feels just right as a bud vase or storytelling shelf piece. A rare survivor with deep visual soul.
