Floral Intricately Carved Vintage Welsh Love Spoon
Welsh love spoons (Llwyau Caru) are objects that hold beautiful symbolism, hand-crafted by folk, they are art pieces made as gifts to symbolise love and commitment.
The earliest known dated lovespoon from Wales, displayed in the St Fagans National History Museum near Cardiff, is from 1667, although the tradition is believed to date back long before that.
According to Welsh folklore, these ornately carved spoons were traditionally made from a single piece of wood by young men as a love token for their sweethearts.
Many folklores note that a man would spend hours carving the lovespoon by hand, in the hope that the woman would accept it. If the woman accepted the spoon, she would demonstrate her interest in him and they would commence their relationship.
They would often carve other symbols into the spoons to add poetic significance and symbolism, to name a few - a chain would symbolise a wish for an everlasting love, a ball in a cage is symbolic of a love held safe (or number of children) a diamond for wealth or good fortune, a cross to symbolise faith, and a flower for affection.
