We are Incredibly excited to bring you our first ever collaboration. We have worked with two very talented makers to bring you our limited edition Hiraeth Cottage (Bwthyn Hiraeth in Welsh) limited edition candle holders.
A beautiful hollowed cottage made completely by hand from St.Agnes stoneware clay and Raku fired. Each cottage is made completely by hand (no potters wheel) through rolling clay out into slabs, folding, coiling and pinching. Each cottage has been hand-painted before entering the firing process.
The firing is done outside in wood ash which means that the final aesthetic of the cottages is unpredictable and unique to every single piece, the cottages will differ in aesthetic every time, for example when oxygen levels differ it creates changes in the glaze and finish, sometimes creating Raku crackles, how beautiful is that!?
Raku is a Japanese word that roughly translates as ‘Joy in the Accident’ which brings a wonderful poetic addition to each piece and the making process. Western raku is loosely based on traditional Japanese low temperature outdoor firings.
This means that every single one of our Hiraeth Cottages are completely unique and characterful in their own way.
These cottages are our own unique design and are based off my grandfather’s Welsh cottage that was built in the 1600s, a place that is very dear to us, and what we have based our logo off for Hiraeth Vintage.
Hiraeth is a Welsh word that is not directly translatable into other languages, it refers to feelings of nostalgia, a longing and a collective memory, a fragmented relic, or memory of a place or time that cannot be revisited, but stays close to us. It is a word that is used to describe memories that we wish we could re-live and places that don’t exist in the same way as they used to. Hiraeth is an intricate nostalgia, a concept that is changeable and one that we relate to the ‘home’, home-making and the people and places that influenced our individual ideas of what ‘home’ means to us.
With each cottage you will receive a pair of miniature By The Hedge beeswax candles carefully formed using a traditional dipping method with their own beeswax collected from their hives over the course of seasons-past. Each candle is dipped patiently by hand to create a perfectly-imperfect, sustainable candle. The wick they use is organic hemp coated in beeswax.
“Light a candle when you feel the need to take a moment to yourself, and watch the beautiful flicker of a natural beeswax flame.”
