This is such a wonderfully substantial antique English stoneware jug, with a beautiful rounded shape, generous handle and the most incredible hand-painted floral decoration.
These traditional stoneware jugs are so often found in earthy browns and beiges, which makes this one particularly special. Instead, this one has been hand-painted in the most wonderful palette of mint green, lilac, dusky pink and deep plum, all sitting beneath a glossy glaze. Even the little wavy detail around the neck and striped base have been beautifully considered, there’s something lovely to look at from every angle.
Likely made by an English studio or small pottery, it is stamped ‘Made in England’ to the base. I haven’t been able to attribute it to a particular maker, but its age, hand-painted decoration and unusual finish give it such a wonderfully individual feel.
It’s a large, weighty piece with real presence; perfect filled with big bunches of garden flowers, dried stems or simply left empty on a dresser or kitchen table. I’ve genuinely never come across another stoneware jug quite like it.
A really unusual piece of antique English pottery, and such a beautiful example of something practical made wonderfully decorative.
