An extraordinary and deeply tactile antique butter stamp, hand-carved from solid wood and decorated with a beautifully detailed strawberry motif. Remarkable both for its scale and craftsmanship, this piece feels far removed from the domestic table, likely made for industrial or dairy use, where butter was produced in quantity and stamped with pride.
The circular face is intricately carved with two ripe strawberries hanging from delicate stems, framed by a repeating border that speaks to both folk tradition and skilled workmanship. The carving is confident and expressive, with wonderful depth and rhythm, every cut still visible, every mark telling of the maker’s hand.
Time and use have softened the wood to a rich, warm patina. Gentle wear, knocks, and age marks are present throughout, adding to its honesty and character. The turned handle sits comfortably in the hand, worn smooth from years of practical use.
The previous owner shared that it was brought back from America, and its size and form certainly suggest a working life in a dairy or creamery rather than a home kitchen. Today, it stands as a sculptural object in its own right, equally at home displayed on a shelf, leaned against a wall, or styled among ceramics and linens.
A rare and soulful object, a true piece of agricultural history, carrying with it the quiet poetry of food-making, labour, and tradition.
Great antique condition with visible signs of age and use, consistent with its history and purpose.
