A richly detailed pair of antique green majolica plates by Hope & Carter of Burslem, dating to the late 19th century. Each plate is beautifully moulded with an abundance of leaves and flowers, raised in relief and finished in a deep emerald green glaze with wonderful depth and variation.

The surface decoration is full of movement and texture, curling stems, layered foliage and softly rounded petals, all brought to life by the glossy majolica glaze that pools into the recesses and catches the light across the raised forms. These are decorative yet substantial pieces, made to be admired as much as used.

Hope & Carter were active in Burslem, Staffordshire during the Victorian period and are particularly known for their richly coloured majolica wares. The plates are both stamped to the reverse, grounding them firmly in this tradition of British ceramic craftsmanship.

They display beautifully on a wall, dresser or table, whether styled together or separately, and bring a timeless sense of abundance and ornament to an interior.

Condition: Both plates are in good antique condition overall. One plate has a small chip to the rim, please refer carefully to the photographs for close-up detail. This does not detract from their display presence and is consistent with age and use.
