This is an incredibly special piece - a rare 19th century Victorian miniature cobbler’s shoe, handmade as a cordwainer’s apprentice piece to demonstrate the skill and craftsmanship involved in traditional shoemaking.

Apprentice pieces were made on a miniature scale as a way for a young craftsman to practise and show that they had mastered the techniques of their trade. What I love about this one is that nothing has been simplified because of its tiny size, it has been constructed just as a proper shoe would have been, only in miniature.

The sole has been individually carved and shaped from solid wood, with a beautifully worked dark leather upper fitted around it, tiny metal eyelets and lacing, and a wonderful row of individually hand-riveted nails following the edge. Even the little heel has been carefully formed. The level of work that has gone into something small enough to sit in the palm of your hand is extraordinary.

More than a hundred years later, it has survived beautifully. The leather has developed the richest, almost black patina, the wooden sole has mellowed with age and all of those tiny handmade details remain wonderfully visible. There is so much evidence of the maker’s hand everywhere you look.

These miniature cordwainer’s pieces are now highly collectible, both as examples of Victorian folk craft and as pieces of social history connected to trades and apprenticeships that have largely disappeared. Finding one with this much character, craftsmanship and original detail still intact feels incredibly special.

A tiny object with an enormous amount of history - and quite honestly, one of the most beautiful antique finds I’ve found for a long time.
