An incredibly rare and wonderfully characterful studio pottery jug by Peter Arnold of Alderney Pottery, featuring a pig in a suit with a wide, joyful grin. Hand-built and full of charm, this sculptural piece is unlike any of Arnold’s more commonly seen stoneware, a true one-off with folk art appeal.
Peter Arnold established Alderney Pottery in 1962 after settling on the small Channel Island of Alderney. He became the island’s only studio potter, creating practical forms in earthy, mottled glazes that reflected the slower pace and raw beauty of island life. His work is typically wheel-thrown and understated, which makes this playful, pig-shaped piece all the more special.
Formed with expressive ears, an open snout-like spout, and hand-painted details, it’s part jug, part sculpture, and completely joyful. A rare glimpse into the more playful side of a respected maker’s legacy.
