A richly glazed slipware jug by Peter Currell Brown of The Snake Pottery (Cam Green, Dursley, Gloucestershire, 1963–83), stamped PB. Hand-decorated in a deep treacle glaze, it carries the motto “Be Merry and Careful” on the front and elegant trailing slipwork on the back. The twisted handle gives it a lovely sculptural quality, full of life and movement.

Peter Currell Brown wrote Smallcreep’s Day while working in a Gloucestershire factory. Its success allowed him to step away from factory work and realise his dream of founding a rural craft pottery (Snake Pottery)  — a story that adds even more resonance to this honest, quietly expressive piece.

Beautiful styled with fresh flowers or herbs from the garden, or simply displayed and admired for its form and sentiment.
