A wonderfully expressive piece of British studio pottery by Paul Stubbs of Dove Workshops, Somerset.
Handcrafted and raku-fired, this striking cockerel has a beautifully sculptural silhouette, its deep charcoal-black body contrasting wonderfully with warm earthy legs and delicate flashes of lustrous pink and silver across the comb and wattle. Fine incised feather details and a wonderfully detailed form give it real personality, making it just as captivating from every angle.
Paul Stubbs established Dove Workshops in Butleigh, Somerset in 1974 before later relocating to Keinton Mandeville. His work is becoming increasingly sought after, with his distinctive maker’s mark impressed to the base of this piece.
Whether displayed amongst a collection of studio pottery, on a country kitchen shelf or as a standalone sculptural object, this charming cockerel has the quiet confidence and handmade character that Hiraeth is all about. A rare and collectible example of British studio ceramics, celebrating craftsmanship, individuality and the enduring beauty of the handmade.
