Rare Welsh Studio Pottery Large ‘Halen’ Salt Pig – Abaty Pottery

A truly special find, this large hand-thrown salt pig was made by Abaty Pottery circa the 1960s/70s, a lesser-known but much-loved Welsh studio. Decorated with deep brown slipware details and boldly inscribed Halen (Welsh for salt), it features a lidded dome form with a generous front opening for easy pinching and spooning.

The back reveals the distinctive swirl motif typical of Abaty’s rustic, folk-inspired work. Beautifully tactile with a sandy stoneware finish, this piece feels right at home on a countertop or shelf, both practical and quietly sculptural.
