There is something endlessly comforting about a vintage tin toy that has survived decades of play and still carries its sense of movement and optimism with it.

This vintage tinplate wind-up racing car was made in Japan by Yonezawa Toys, one of the most celebrated producers of post-war tin toys. Finished in a bold, timeworn red with graphic racing details, crossed chequered flags and a painted driver at the wheel, it has a wonderful sense of energy and character.

The wind-up mechanism is fully working, sending the car happily trundling along just as it would have done years ago, a small, joyful moment of movement that feels surprisingly grounding. The original paintwork shows gentle wear consistent with age and use, which only adds to its charm and sense of history.

Marked to the back with “YONE – No. 2091 – Made in Japan”, this piece dates to the late 1950s–1960s, a period when Japanese tin toys were beautifully made, mechanically clever, and designed to spark imagination.

Whether displayed on a shelf, windowsill or nestled amongst books and objects, it brings a quiet playfulness to a space. A piece that speaks to childhood imagination, slower afternoons, and the joy of well-made things.
