A truly enchanting and very rare mid-century Russian nesting mushroom, carved from wood and hand-painted in rich, earthy tones. The large toadstool opens to reveal a series of 10 tiny mushrooms nestled inside, each one individually shaped and painted, a wonderfully playful take on the traditional Matryoshka form.
With its vibrant red cap dotted with black spots and warm honey-coloured stem, this piece feels lifted straight from a woodland fairytale. Part folk art, part curiosity, it carries a joyful sense of nostalgia and craftsmanship that is increasingly hard to find. Each smaller mushroom mirrors the form of the larger one, creating a delightful rhythm and moment of surprise as each layer is revealed.
Importantly, the underside retains its original Russian stamp and paper label, a rare surviving detail that helps date the piece and confirms its authenticity. These markings are seldom still present and add significant collectability and historical interest.
Mushroom nesting sets are far less common than traditional Russian dolls and are now increasingly sought after, particularly when complete and in such charming condition. Whether displayed opened out or neatly stacked back together, this set makes a striking sculptural object, equally at home on a shelf, mantel, or among a carefully curated collection of folk art.
