Very Rare Vintage Moorland Staffordshire Sea Shell Spongeware Jug

This incredible jug stopped me in my tracks, I actually shrieked the second I laid eyes on it, the kind of treasure that makes your heart skip a beat.  An utterly incredible sea shell spongeware jug by Moorland Stafforshire, and one of those rare pieces that feels both incredibly beautiful and timeless. 

The form is beautifully generous, with a softly rounded body, elegant footed base and a perfectly shaped handle. The surface is alive with rich cobalt spongeware, layered with bold sea shell motifs, scallops, spirals and shell forms dancing across the jug like treasures washed ashore. Every angle reveals something new.

Turn it over and the stamp reads:

“Moorland, Chelsea Works,  Burslem – Staffordshire”

A wonderful, clear backstamp that roots this piece firmly in the long tradition of English pottery craftsmanship, and adds that extra layer of story collectors love.

It works effortlessly as a jug or as a vase (as you can see, it holds flowers beautifully), but honestly, it’s a piece that deserves to be admired even when empty. Joyful, coastal, and full of character - a truly special find, and one I’ll be thinking about for a long time.
