Very Rare Welsh Studio Pottery Owl Jug by Steve Barkworth, Pen y Bonc Pottery, Amlwch, Anglesey

A truly special piece of Welsh studio pottery, handmade by Steve Barkworth at Pen y Bonc Pottery, Amlwch, Anglesey. Barkworth’s pieces were produced in small batches and are rarely found, making this wonderful owl jug a particularly scarce example of Anglesey’s ceramic heritage.

The jug has a beautiful, substantial presence, with its wonderfully organic form shaped into an owl and every surface brought to life with expressive hand-painted decoration. Deep cobalt and softer washed blues sit alongside rich mossy greens, with sweeping feather and wing motifs wrapping around the body and the owl’s characterful face forming the spout.

Full of the little irregularities and painterly details that make studio pottery so special, it feels somewhere between a functional vessel and a piece of folk art sculpture. Finished with the potter’s SB mark impressed beneath the handle.

A rare and highly collectable piece of Welsh studio pottery and completely one of a kind.
