There is something so quietly beautiful about this piece. Understated, textural, honest, the kind of studio pottery that feels completely at home in a Welsh kitchen.
This vintage sauce jug and matching saucer was made at Creigiau Pottery in South Wales, formerly Vale and taken over by Reg and Jean Southcliffe in 1962 as Creigiau. The impressed stamp to the base is consistent with work produced from 1962 onwards, when the pottery evolved under Southcliffe’s direction, a lovely, grounded pieces of Welsh studio ceramics.
The jug has the most wonderful sculptural form: a softly pinched pouring lip and an elongated, flat handle that feels sculptural and lovely to hold. The body is carved with fine vertical ribbing, allowing the rich iron-red clay to show through beneath the glaze. The glaze itself is a muted, misty grey with subtle pooling around the rim, earthy and coastal all at once.
The matching saucer mirrors the ribbed texture, framing the jug beautifully and giving it a real sense of intention as a set.
