I absolutely love this one. Such a fun find - there’s something especially brilliant about the slightly cheeky, humorous quote paired with a piece of pottery that is actually so beautifully and sophisticatedly made.
Made in the 1980s by John and Bruce Crisp of Bruton Pottery, Somerset, it is hand-painted with the wonderfully honest inscription:
‘You have to kiss a lot of toads to find your Prince Charming.’
The warm speckled cream stoneware is decorated with deep cobalt blue stripes around the top, with little hand-painted flowers around the base. I especially love that the lettering travels right around the mug, so you have to turn it in your hands to read the whole thing, a conversation starter for sure!
It has a lovely generous shape, with a gently flared rim and beautifully formed curved handle. Beneath the humour it’s a really accomplished piece of studio pottery, which I think makes it all the more special.
BRUTON marked to the base. A wonderful and slightly unusual piece of 1980s British studio pottery.
