There is something so grounding about Welsh studio pottery especially when it was made in North Wales!
This beautiful vase was made at Anvil Pottery in Llanrhaeadr, Denbigh, North Wales, by John Hughes (working alongside his brother Allan Hughes between 1981-2007). A piece shaped and glazed within the hills and valleys of North Wales.
The form is softly traditional: a gently rounded body rising to a slightly flared neck, timeless and balanced. The glaze is what makes it sing, a hazy coastal blue washing over the lower half, reminiscent of sea mist or Anglesey skies, meeting a warm, sandy, stone-toned neck that feels like weathered shoreline rock. Subtle banding at the shoulder adds that quiet studio detail that I love.
It has a beautiful weight in the hand and a calm, honest presence equally lovely styled with dried flowers, fresh garden stems, or simply left empty as a sculptural object.
Original “Anvil Pottery – Made in Wales” label still present.
