A beautifully characterful piece of Welsh studio pottery by Pauline Paterson of Black Mountain Pottery, working in Talgarth, Brecon from the 1980s onwards.

Finished in a striking palette of cobalt blue over a speckled, stone-toned base, this miniature creamer has a wonderfully expressive, painterly quality. Diagonal bands of blue sweep across the surface, layered over a richly freckled ground, giving it a sense of movement, like rain drifting across a window or waves catching the light.

The glaze is beautifully varied, pooling and breaking in places, with a softly mottled interior that adds to its earthy, tactile feel. The form is gently rounded with a delicate pouring lip, and a perfectly balanced handle that feels both sturdy and sculptural in the hand.

There’s something especially joyful about this piece, bold yet grounded, playful yet timeless, making it just as beautiful styled on a shelf as it is used.

Pauline Paterson is a long-standing member of the South Wales Potters, exhibiting both in Britain and internationally, with work rooted in a love of food, home and the rituals that surround them, something that feels so present in this piece.

Perfect for a single stem, a small gathering of matches, or simply as part of a shelf of well-loved ceramics.

A small but incredibly soulful piece, rich in texture, tone and quiet Welsh craft tradition.
