Vintage Hand-Carved Yugoslavian Wooden Folk Art Wedding Cup

A beautiful piece of traditional Yugoslavian folk art, this vintage wooden wedding cup has been intricately hand-carved with wonderful geometric patterns and decorative cut-out details.

Traditionally known as wedding or shepherd’s cups, these wooden vessels are associated with the folk traditions of the former Yugoslavia. Wedding cups are thought to have been used for sharing a drink during marriage celebrations, symbolising unity and the beginning of a life together, whilst shepherd’s cups were traditionally carried on belts for drinking whilst tending their flocks.

I particularly love its sculptural shape, warm honey-coloured wood and beautifully detailed carvings. A wonderfully decorative piece to display on a bookshelf or coffee table, or to repurpose as a little holder for dried flowers, matches or other small treasures.
