Vintage Mediterranean Studio Pottery Sgraffito Bird Jug

Such a special piece of vintage studio pottery, with all the warmth and character of Mediterranean folk art.

Handmade with a wonderfully soft, irregular form, the jug is decorated using a sgraffito-style technique with a beautiful hand-drawn bird surrounded by large, almost abstract florals. The earthy palette of dusty pinks, warm terracotta and sandy cream feels sun-faded and wonderfully timeworn, with tiny variations in the glaze that make the surface particularly lovely.

I adore the bird, naive and full of movement, as though lifted from an old piece of folk art or a drawing found in a well-loved sketchbook.

The piece is signed to one side, although despite searching I haven’t yet been able to identify its maker. Whoever made it had a wonderfully distinctive hand, and it feels very much like a piece of art in its own right.
