Hand-thrown at Selborne Pottery in Hampshire by Robert Goldsmith, it has his wonderful combination of rich copper red and cobalt blue decoration running in fine vertical stripes over a soft, grey stoneware glaze.
Goldsmith established Selborne Pottery in 1985 and his work is still made using traditional studio pottery techniques - pieces are thrown and turned by hand, with no moulds or machinery, before being decorated and high-fired. I think you can really see that skill in this one; the gently waisted shape, flared pouring lip and beautifully pulled handle are every bit as lovely as the decoration.
The stripes have that slight movement and variation that only comes from being painted by hand, with little speckles and changes in the glaze showing through beneath them. The raspberry-red against the blue is particularly gorgeous.
A really special piece of British studio pottery, and one that is just as beautiful filled with flowers or dried grasses as it is simply sitting on a shelf.
Stamped ‘R. Goldsmith - Selborne Pottery’ to the base.
