A beautifully characterful piece of Welsh studio pottery by Pauline Paterson of Black Mountain Pottery, working in Talgarth, Brecon from the 1980s onwards.

Finished in a soft, earthy glaze of mossy greens and muted blues, this miniature creamer has a wonderfully organic, almost landscape-like quality. Vertical bands of glaze drift down the form, pooling and breaking over a speckled, stone-toned base, like rain on weathered stone or sea grasses in the wind.

The shape is gently rounded with a subtle pouring lip, and a perfectly formed handle that feels both sturdy and sculptural. There’s a real sense of movement in the piece, both in the glaze and the form itself, making it just as beautiful to display as it is to use.

Pauline Paterson is a long-standing member of the South Wales Potters, exhibiting both in Britain and internationally, with work rooted in a love of food, home and the rituals that surround them, something that feels so present in this piece.

Perfect for a single stem, a small gathering of matches, or simply as part of a shelf of well-loved ceramics.

A small but incredibly soulful piece, rich in texture, tone and quiet Welsh craft tradition.
