A truly exceptional piece of vintage studio pottery, full of movement, texture and the unmistakable touch of a skilled maker. Hand-thrown in beautifully speckled stoneware, this striking jug is finished in a soft white glaze with expressive hand-painted cobalt blue brushstrokes that feel wonderfully fluid and organic, no two angles quite the same.
One of my favourite details is the beautifully sculpted rope-twist handle, a lovely piece of craftsmanship that gives the jug such character in the hand. Tucked discreetly beneath the handle is an impressed potter’s seal depicting an ear of wheat. Although I’ve been unable to identify the maker, it’s clear this is the work of an accomplished studio potter, with every detail thoughtfully considered, from the elegant proportions to the confident glazing and beautifully finished foot.
Whether displayed as a sculptural piece in its own right or filled with freshly gathered flowers, this is one of those timeless ceramics that quietly draws the eye and brings warmth to a shelf, dresser or kitchen table.
A beautifully made one-off piece that celebrates the artistry and individuality of British studio pottery.
