Vintage One-of-a-Kind Studio Pottery Mermaid Wall Sculpture

Every so often I come across a piece that makes me stop in my tracks, and this beautiful mermaid is certainly one of them.

An incredible piece of handmade studio pottery, depicting the most beautiful mermaid with flowing, intricately carved hair, wonderfully expressive eyes and a little blue glazed fish nestled amongst her curls. There is so much to admire in the detail, from the tiny hand-impressed markings to the contrast between the warm, earthy stoneware and the glossy, inky blue glaze of the fish.

There’s something so lovely about imagining the person who made her, carefully shaping and carving every little detail by hand. She feels almost like a character from an old seaside folktale, and I think that’s what makes her so special.

She bears an impressed maker’s mark which appears to read ‘PD’, but despite spending quite some time researching, I haven’t been able to identify the artist. I would absolutely love to know more about her story, although I think there’s something rather wonderful about the mystery too.

A truly remarkable, one-of-a-kind piece of ceramic art, and one that deserves to be treasured. I can just imagine her hanging in a little cottage by the sea, although she would be equally beautiful bringing a little of that seaside feeling to a home much further inland.
