Vintage Studio Pottery Mug by George Young, St Andrews, Scotland

A softly thrown and beautifully balanced studio pottery mug by George Young of Church Square Ceramics, St Andrews. Made in the Scottish Borders in the 1980s or early 1990s, this piece carries all the quiet charm and utility of everyday studio ware, designed to be used, loved, and held often.

The glaze is a gentle speckled oatmeal with hand-painted brushwork in deep blue and brown, leaves or abstracted stems curling around the body in a loose, fluid rhythm. There’s something almost painterly about it, like a quick sketch captured in clay. The wide shape and flared rim make it feel grounded and generous, perfect for morning coffee or herbal tea in the late afternoon.
