This is such a beautiful piece of vintage studio pottery - a long, softly shaped tray covered in the most gorgeous painterly brushstrokes in pastel pink, misty blue and soft green, all melting into one another beneath a lightly speckled glaze.
The colours instantly reminded me of the seaside: faded shells, sea glass, washed-out stone and that slightly grey-blue colour the water takes on under a cloudy sky. Nothing feels too precise or controlled, and that’s exactly what I love about it - the brush marks overlap and soften into one another, with little areas of deeper colour, speckling and variation across the surface that make the whole piece feel almost like an abstract painting.
It would be absolutely gorgeous on a coffee table or sideboard filled with collected treasures - shells, pebbles, photographs, candles and a little box of matches.
The tray is signed ‘RLW’ to the base. I haven’t been able to identify the potter, but it’s clearly a very considered, beautifully made piece of studio pottery and one I was immediately drawn to.
