A beautifully earthy and tactile piece, this hand-thrown studio pottery vase was made at Rookes Pottery, located in the rural village of Ipstones, Staffordshire. Known for their rustic, traditional forms and folk-inspired decoration, Rookes Pottery was a celebrated name among British studio potters during the 20th century.
This vase features a classic terracotta clay body, left unglazed on the lower half to showcase its natural texture. The upper section is decorated in rich brown slip with a hand-carved sgraffito floral border on a cream ground, a nod to English slipware traditions. The glossy upper glaze offers a beautiful contrast to the matte clay below, giving the piece an honest, grounded presence.
Stamped on the base: Rookes Pottery, Ipstones, with the studio’s distinctive heron logo.
