Oh I love this one. A beautiful piece of vintage Welsh studio pottery, made as a traditional kitchen storage jar and inscribed ‘BLAWD’ - Welsh for ‘flour’.
It has the loveliest softly rounded shape, with the throwing lines still visible around the body and a wonderful oatmeal-toned glaze full of tiny brown speckles and subtle variations. The little hand-applied BLAWD plaque is such a lovely detail, with the lettering picked out in a deeper earthy brown, and the lid is finished with a generous looped handle that makes the whole piece feel beautifully considered.
There is something so timeless about old studio pottery made for the kitchen, properly useful, but made with so much care that it deserves to stay out on the worktop. This would be gorgeous filled with flour as intended, or used for any number of kitchen staples.
A wonderfully tactile piece of Welsh pottery, with all those tiny irregularities and traces of the maker’s hand that make studio pottery so special.
