A beautiful pair of Welsh studio pottery salt and pepper shakers, simple, tactile, and full of that quiet character I’m always drawn to.
Thrown in a warm speckled stoneware clay, each shaker has a soft, rounded dome shape with an exposed terracotta top and base. The glaze is a gentle misty grey, flecked and organic, with a loose, painterly brushstroke in deep blue-grey sweeping around the body, almost like a shoreline curve or a passing cloud over the sea.
They are stamped “WALES” to the base, but I’ve not been able to attribute them to a specific pottery or maker. That said, the form, clay body and glazing feel very much in keeping with mid-to-late 20th century Welsh studio traditions, earthy, understated, beautifully made for everyday use.
They have their original plastic stoppers intact.
I love pieces like this on a kitchen shelf, practical, yes, but also quietly sculptural. The kind of objects that make even a simple breakfast table feel considered.
