A quietly breathtaking photographic survey of Wales, captured from above at a moment when landscape, industry, and tradition were deeply entwined.

Wales from the Air – A Survey of the Physical and Cultural Landscape was written by G. Melvyn Howe, M.Sc., Lecturer in Geography at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and published in 1957 by the University of Wales Press, Cardiff.

Illustrated throughout with stunning black-and-white aerial photographs, the book documents Snowdonia’s ridgelines and passes, river valleys, estuaries, slate quarries, industrial towns, reservoirs, and coastal settlements. Seen from the air, the Welsh landscape reveals its patterns of labour, history, and habitation, field boundaries, transport routes, and communities etched into the land.

This is a true coffee-table book with substance: large-format, beautifully composed, and deeply evocative. Both scholarly and poetic, it invites slow looking and repeated return. Copies are now increasingly scarce, and this edition feels especially collectable for its visual quality, academic provenance, and powerful sense of place.

A meaningful piece for lovers of Welsh history, landscape photography, geography, and anyone drawn to books that hold memory as much as information.
